She, her, hers
Kaitlin is a Licensed Professional Counselor who has earned her Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology where her study of focus was trauma and crisis intervention. She earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology from DePaul University. Kaitlin has experience working with children, teens, and adults from all walks of life. A main portion of her clinical experience has been in community mental health where she facilitated individual, family, and group therapy services for various populations in Chicago, Illinois. She has also worked within school settings providing academic counseling for students in grades first through eighth. She has worked alongside folks coping with post-traumatic stress, depression, anxiety, traumatic grief, adjustment concerns, and adolescent developmental needs. Kaitlin is also a EMDR trainee.
Kaitlin utilizes an eclectic approach to therapy in which she pulls from various theories and modalities. She practices from a person-centered and trauma-informed lens in which she validates the client’s needs and experiences by providing unconditional positive regard, empathy, and genuineness during every session. She feels that an integral part of the counseling process involves highlighting the client’s ever-evolving strengths to foster a positive sense of self and safety. She also believes the client is the expert of their own life and empowers them to overcome challenges by helping them discover and enhance their own unique skills.
She adds structure to her practice by using Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy interventions along with Play Therapy techniques for children. In addition to trauma-specific work, she uses Polyvagal theory to provide psychoeducation about the connection between our physical and mental health. She incorporates movement, breathwork, and mindfulness exercises into her counseling sessions to support balanced emotional regulation. She emphasizes building a strong rapport with her clients because she believes a trustful client-counselor relationship is the essential spark that initially promotes growth and healing. Her overall approach to understanding clients is holistic, as she considers and affirms the impact of cultural, biological, spiritual, and intersectional identities on a client’s well-being to treat their individualized needs.
For self-care, Kaitlin enjoys outdoor activities like biking around the city, golfing, and nature walks. She also enjoys exploring new places and spending quality time with friends, family, and her lovable tuxedo cat. A happy work-life balance and secure boundaries are an essential part of her self-care needs, which she encourages for all of her clients as well.
