Maintaining Progress: Continuing Your PHP IOP Hospital Program SkillsAfter Discharge

December 14, 2023

Written by: Lisa Wagner

Receiving treatment through a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a significant step towards mental health recovery. These programs equip individuals with essential coping skills, therapy techniques, and emotional support. However, the real challenge often begins after discharge, when individuals must continue their progress independently. This transition can be daunting, but with the right plan and strategies, it is possible to maintain and even improve upon the positive changes made during the PHP or IOP hospital program.

Continue Therapy

Most PHP or IOP programs involve therapy sessions, so consider continuing with weekly or twice-a-week therapy on an outpatient basis. Therapy provides a safe space to discuss challenges and work on coping
strategies. Regular sessions help you navigate difficult moments and reinforce positive behaviors learned
during your hospital program.

Develop a Supportive Network

One of the key elements of PHP and IOP programs is the sense of community and understanding, especially in group counseling. After discharge, it’s crucial to maintain this type of support network. Stay in touch with individuals you met during the program-(if your program allows it), join local support groups, or engage with online communities. Having people who understand your journey can provide invaluable emotional support and motivation.

Attend Group Counseling at a Private Practice

Group counseling offers a unique dynamic where individuals facing similar challenges come together to share experiences and strategies for coping. Joining a group counseling session at a private practice can provide a supportive environment where you can discuss your progress, setbacks, and successes. The guidance of a professional therapist and the shared experiences of group members can foster a sense of belonging and understanding.

Establish a Routine

Structured routines can provide stability and a sense of purpose. Establish a daily schedule that includes
regular wake-up times, meal schedules, exercise, and relaxation. This routine not only gives your day a framework but also contributes significantly to your overall well-being. It’s not uncommon for recent
discharges to struggle with getting out of bed, so structuring your life in a way that requires you to get up
early and start your day, such as walking your dog or attending an exercise class can be helpful.

Practice Mindfulness and Self-Compassion

Mindfulness techniques, such as meditation and breathing exercises, can be powerful tools for managing
stress and anxiety. Additionally, practicing self-compassion, which involves treating yourself with kindness and understanding, can help counter negative self-talk and promote a positive self-image.

Healthy Lifestyle Choices

A balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep are fundamental to mental and physical well-being.
Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol consumption, as they can negatively impact your mood and disrupt sleep patterns. Engaging in activities that bring you joy and relaxation, such as hobbies or spending time with loved ones, can also boost your overall mood.

Set Realistic Goals

Establish realistic and achievable goals for yourself. These goals could be related to work, relationships,
hobbies, or personal development. Break down larger goals into smaller, manageable steps. Celebrate your
achievements, no matter how small they may seem. Acknowledging your progress boosts confidence and
motivation.

Stay Informed

Educate yourself about your mental health condition. Understanding the triggers, symptoms, and effective
coping strategies can empower you to manage your mental health more effectively. Stay informed about new therapies, medications, and self-help techniques through reputable sources.

Regularly Reassess Your Progress

Periodically evaluate your mental health and well-being. Reflect on the strategies that work for you and those that need adjustment. Be honest with yourself about your feelings and seek help if you notice signs of relapse or worsening symptoms.

Conclusion

Continuing the positive momentum gained in a PHP or IOP hospital program requires dedication, self-awareness, and ongoing effort. By staying connected with supportive communities, maintaining healthy habits, and proactively managing your mental health, you can build a fulfilling life post-discharge. Remember, progress is a journey, and with determination and the right resources, you can lead a mentally healthy and fulfilling life.
