As mental health professionals, we know that parents/caregivers are always on the look out for signs that their child or teen is struggling. You want the best for your child and want to support them as best you can! Sometimes early signs of mental health concerns are hard to notice – Here is a quick guide to some of the most common mental health concerns for kids/teens:
Anxiety/Depression
Symptoms of anxiety and depression are often co-occurring, so if we see signs of one, we look for signs of the other. Look out for excessive worry and physical symptoms (like headaches or stomachaches), as well as low energy, a lack of motivation for enjoyable activities, and changes in eating/sleeping.
Behavior/Conduct Problems
These problems can manifest through increased aggression, and defiant behaviors that are disruptive. Symptoms of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) including hyperactivity and impulsivity often manifest as disruptive behaviors as well.
Eating Problems
Early signs of a developing issue involving eating behaviors can be very hard to detect. Pay attention to any signs of an unhealthy relationship with food, body image, or exercise. You may notice this in your child’s comments about themselves or others, or their eating habits.
Substance Use
It can be difficult to differentiate between normal teenage behavior and potential substance use. Substances are often used as a way to cope with emotional issues. Look out for your child becoming more distant/withdrawn, decreased academic performance, increased tardiness, and rapid changes in mood or conduct issues.
By looking out for these signs, you can help spot early indicators of a mental health concern before it develops. It’s also important to foster open communication with your child at an early age, and express your openness to discussing feelings without judgement. A doctor or mental health professional can provide more support if you believe your child is struggling with their mental health.
